| Just sharing some fun data one of our drivers Matt put together from last weekends race. The first chart shows our position in the race over laps driven The second chart shows the same thing just with our lap times added. Here's his commentary at the data :
"Looking at the data and thinking about it a bit, having drivers who are faster or slower by a few seconds doesn’t matter nearly as much as minimizing the time in the pits. One pit stop adds a huge amount of lost track time, equal to three or four laps! I think if you want to finish as high as possible, filling the tank every pit and running it until it’s dry will make a very big difference. Remove two pit stops and add 8 laps to our total, and suddenly we go from 65th to 48th in the standings. Also, assuming an average lap time of 2 minutes and 30 seconds, the hour we spent fixing the transmission on Saturday is equal to 24 laps. Add those 24 laps to our total and we are in 29th place. Do both (add 24 laps for the broken transmission and add 8 for less pit stops) and the car is as high as 15th place."
and now onto the data:
Dropping almost 40 positions in one pit stop was a staggering statistic. Now, the hope is you make them back when other teams pit, but the guys who really minimize pit stops are making out far better than those who don't have a good pit strategy. I know this is all common sense, but to see it laid out in front of you speaks volumes. So instead of trying to set the speed record each lap, run good clean laps, and minimize the pit stops.
